How Selective Laser Melting Works

A thin layer of metal powder
rolls out across the build platform, sealed inside a chamber and purged with inert gas to keep oxygen out.

A laser traces the part's cross-section
into that layer, fully melting the powder along the path it follows.

The platform drops slightly
and a new layer of powder is spread on top.

The oxygen-controlled atmosphere matters more than it sounds: without it, metals like aluminium and stainless steel would oxidise mid-build and the part would come out brittle or porous.
